How to Reduce High Water Bills
Larger than normal water bills are received by many home and business owners across the United States. Big and small water leaks are the most common causes for unusually high water bills. But before shaking your head in despair and checking for leaks under the foundation of your home - head for the toilet. Eight out of ten cases of excessive water usage originate from leaking toilets, and they are an easy fix.
The problem with a leaky toilet is that you cannot hear the sound of running water. That is why toilets are also termed the "silent leakers" - they can run constantly without being detected. A running toilet can multiple your water bill in no time. Before assuming the worst when receiving an inflated water bill, perform a simple dye test to determine if your toilet is the leaking source.
Add about 20 drops of food dye into the tank of your toilet. Wait half an hour without flushing the toilet. If color appears in the bowl, you have a leaking toilet that is most probably the culprit of the excessive water usage. Call your local plumber to fix the malfunctioning toilet.
If the dye test rules out the toilet as the leaking source, then you must go to your water meter and record the black and white digits on display. Read you water meter again after a trial period of a couple of hours without using water in the home. If you record different digits and notice the star or triangle shaped device spinning fast – that may indicate a leaking source not associated to your toilet. Have your plumber perform leak-detection and stop the water leak fast.
