A Plumber’s Educational Requirements to a Rewarding Career

A plumbing career is one of the most rewarding careers, as this trade will never become obsolete. There will always be buildings, and water running through it, which requires constant maintenance and repair. Let us see what plumber qualifications are necessary to make this career a success.

Any kind of plumber training basically covers five areas related to the water system, which are steam fitting, pipefitting, plumbing, sprinkler fitting and pipe laying. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, plumbers should specialize in one of the above areas. Most people are not aware that plumbers are a part of the construction trade, though everyone at some time or another has needed help from a plumber.

A construction plumber can install and repair various kinds of pipes as well as any kind of fixture or appliance which is connected to the water system. Every building uses different kinds of pipes, whether it is a residential or a commercial building. The pipes are used for drain systems, gas systems or water pipe systems. The plumber can also install and repair bathtubs, showers, sinks, toilets and water heaters.

A plumber's training includes knowledge of the pipes and the various kinds of material used for them. Pipes are made of copper, steel, cast-iron and plastic and the plumber should know what is best used in which place. For installation of pipes and pipe fittings, he must know how to read blueprints, because he may have to cut through walls or floors to install the pipes. Besides, a plumber must be well–versed in the rules and regulations regarding local, state, or federal plumbing codes. Also, he must be polite and patient when he is dealing with his clients.

It is easy to join the profession through plumber apprentice programs, but the armed forces and community or junior colleges can also be helpful.For a good plumbing career it is best to begin with a comprehensive apprenticeship program, as it is an ideal combination of classroom instruction and practical training. Several apprenticeship programs are offered by union and non-union organizations lasting up to 5 years. It is advisable to acquire a license through the state before applying for a job or being self-employed, as every city, county or state carries its own rules and regulations.
