Plumbing Maintenance Checklist

Keeping the plumbing system in functioning order is the only way to prolong the life of your plumbing fixtures and avoid expensive plumbing repairs. The following checklist should be carried out twice a year to maintain the good order of your home plumbing and nip in the bud any potential plumbing complication. It is highly recommended to have a professional plumber close by in case a plumbing problem spins out of control.

1. Look for signs of water leaks along external pipes, where pipes run through walls or under the foundation of your home. Click the following link for leak detection information.

2. Look for signs of pipe corrosion that can eat away the piping material and cause water to leak out. Click the link for visible signs of pipe corrosion.

3. Test water pressure in faucets and showerheads. Poor water pressure may indicate sediment accumulation or a problem in the water supply line. Click water pressure for the causes and solutions of low water pressure.

4. Check the speed of drainage in sinks, bathtubs and showers. Drains should have a full swirl when draining. Slow drainage may indicate a blocked drainpipe. If bubbles appear while water is draining out, this is also a sign of a problematic drain. Click for more information on drains.

5. Flush each toilet and check for proper flushing. Open the tank and check for rusty or broken parts. Check that water does not continue to run after flushing and make sure there is no sign of water pooling around the base of the toilet.

6. Check for mildew in moist areas of the home such as bathrooms or basements.

7. Look for loose or cracked tiles in bathrooms or near water pipes. Fractured or slack tiles are caused by old or active water leaks that rot the surface behind the tile.

8. Call a professional water heater contractor to drain the storage tank and remove inside sediment buildup.
