Tipping a Plumber
When a plumber does any work for you, you can never be sure whether he is charging you the correct amount, or just overcharging you because you do not understand anything about plumbing rates. (Click for more information on plumbing costs). In general, payments to plumbers are so diverse, because there are no fixed prices for repairing clogged drains, blocked toilets or leaking pipes. No plumber in the US is ready to give a quote on the phone even for simple plumbing jobs. They can only give you an estimate after the technician has surveyed the work that has to be done.
After paying off the plumber, a dilemma arises: is the plumber expecting a tip? Are there some unwritten rules about tipping plumbers?
Most of the plumbing companies do not find it necessary to tip the plumbers every time. If a customer is satisfied with the work, he normally calls the main office and mentions the quality and the service that the plumber has offered them. Plumber tipping is not common practice for all.
Nevertheless, there is no harm in tipping a plumber, if the customer feels that the job has been exceptional, because no plumbing job is really pleasant and sometimes it is quite difficult too. Plumbing companies bear no ill will against their plumbers if they receive a tip from a satisfied customer, and it does not violate company policy in any way.
