What makes a good sump pump system
You may have a sump pump system in your basement from when you bought the house, but you may want to think about what you have in there and what the plumbing industry would consider a good sump system. Many homeowners think if they have a pump then the system is good enough. You don't want to have good enough in your basement you want what is right.

Besides the sump pump itself, you want to make sure that the sump liner is in good condition. Check to see if the liner is durable enough or the pump housing is strong enough to be able to support the water coming in. You want a full functioning sump pump and liner and or housing.

Here is just a side note if you are buying a new pump or if you bought a house with a pump and you want to know what the warranty is, there isn't a pump company that will give a full life time policy on a pump. Don't be suckered when someone tells you that there are free replacement parts for as long as the pump will last because it isn't true.

Make sure the sump pump has an air tight lid that prevents water from evaporating out of the sump pit. The lid must be tight sp that no debris can get through. When debris falls through it can possibly clog the switch or the pump. The lid will also act as a silencer so the pump won't sound so loud. The cover will also make the system look great. The best thing to get is a sump lid with a floor drain.

Some sump pumps will come with a stand. The reason for the stand is so that the pump doesn't sit on the floor or on the sump liner. This is a great method because it keeps, mud, debris and gravel from getting into the pump and doing some damage to it. Putting a pump on a stand will also keep the check valve and discharge pipe clean from mud.

Some pumps come with alarms, an alarm is great because it lets you know when the pump has failed. The battery powered alarm will automatically sound like an alarm clock. This way you have time to fix it before a potentially storm with massive flooding. A pump alarm is the way to go. If you can make sure the pump comes with it. All of these objects listed above put together make one great sump system.
