Types of Water Filters
Carafe (pour through)
Carafe products are portable pitchers or jugs with carbon filters that screen out impurities as water is poured through. Carafe filters provide the simplest, inexpensive water purification solution by reducing benzene, chlorine, sediment, pesticides and industrial solvents from tap water. However, such filters are ineffective at removing bacteria from water, and are unable to filter large quantities of water in any given time.
Faucet-Mounted
As the name implies - this filter is directly mounted on the faucet with minimal installation, and provides tap water purification at a single point in your home. Faucet mounted water filters reduce mercury, lead, sediment, asbestos and chlorine, and screen out microbiological cysts that can contaminate clean water. Tap mounted filters restrict water flow and cannot be used on all faucet types.
Countertop
Countertop filters are equipped with a diverter valve that replaces the faucet aerator to provide purified tap water on demand. Countertop filters are easy to install because they don't require plumbing modification, however these filters may clutter kitchen countertops and cannot work on pull-out vegetable sprayer faucet types. A pull-out sprayer faucet will require under sink filters.
Plumbed-in (under-sink)
Usually fixed under sinks for a clutter free kitchen – out of sight plumbed-in filters are installed by professional plumbers into residential water lines to purify large quantities of water. Under sink filters can be plumbed into existing sink faucet or discharge potable water through separate taps.
Point of Entry (whole-house)
Whole house filters are installed in water mains, and filter water at the point of entry to your home. Point of Entry filters provide safe, chlorine-free water from every household faucet.
